Matsuri is a cross-continental musical partnership with the "elegant and exacting" (the Boston Globe) quartet Hub New Music, renowned shakuhachi player Kojiro Umezaki of the Silk Road Ensemble, and the composers of the Asia/America New Music Institute (AANMI). In a program featuring several new pieces commissioned for this project, Hub and Umezaki build dialogues between eastern and western musical traditions in a mixed ensemble comprised of flute, clarinet, violin, cello, and shakuhachi. The project's name is the Japanese word for festival, a concept which composers Takuma Itoh, Matthew Aucoin, Sayo Kosugi, Chad Cannon, Carlos Simon, Sun Young Park, and Umezaki himself used in crafting work that reflects on musical ancestry and celebrates intercultural community.
