Hub New Music is a group of passionate educators dedicated to creating comprehensive residency programs for students of many disciplines. Please see below for a list of the ensemble’s educational programs for university students.

CHAMBER MUSIC COACHINGS AND MASTERCLASSES

Each member of HNM is a versatile performer, working in a variety of contexts and genres. HNM offers both public chamber music masterclasses as well as private coachings for student ensembles.

COMPOSITION WORKSHOPs

Hub New Music frequently workshops student pieces in a masterclass setting, offering feedback on topics such as orchestration for mixed quartet, use of extended techniques, and effective notation. Hub is also available to perform works in concert and/or record them.

COMMISSIONING SEMINAR

In this seminar geared toward student composers, Hub leads a discussion on its commissioning process. In the talk, the group discusses developing relationships with performers, fundraising for a new piece, and creating a commissioning agreement.

THE 21ST CENTURY MUSICIAN

HNM's members enjoy diverse backgrounds as performers, composers, curators, and entrepreneurs. Our lecture on 21st century musicianship gives students a look at running an arts organization touching upon the basics of marketing, development, management, outreach, and artistic planning.

DEMYSTIFYING SELF-MANAGEMENT

Flutist, Michael Avitabile, uses his background in artist management & PR to discuss the business of booking concerts and tours. In this lecture, students will learn about different types of presenters, creating an effective pitch, building tours, designing concert programs, and crafting educational residencies.

THE FIRST REHEARSAL

Performers of new music face the challenge of tackling works that in many instances have been performed only a handful times or not at all. HNM’s cellist Jesse Christeson leads a talk on how to prepare for the first rehearsal of a new work with methods of score study, cueing parts, and rehearsal techniques.

SIDE BY SIDE PERFORMANCE

Hub New Music can perform several larger works alongside students, giving them an inside look at working with a professional contemporary music ensemble. Note these residencies require several days of preparation with students and are based on the repertoire selection.
