Remembering Black Mountain College

with Yaz Lancaster

ABOUT

Lancaster’s video opera, Paper Tiger, commissioned by Opera Philadelphia.

Hub is collaborating with composer Yaz Lancaster on a work inspired by the rich legacy of Black Mountain College, an historic institution open between 1933-57. BMC’s uniquely progressive educational approach nurtured some of the most brilliant artistic minds of the time. It also provided refuge for artists fleeing Nazi Germany after the closure of the Bauhaus in 1933. For this project, Lancaster visited the BMC Museum in Asheville, NC, to draw inspiration from the collection. Both the collection and BMC’s fascinating history are a point of departure for a program exploring themes of finding community and defining “home.” Hub pairs Lancaster’s piece with other newly commissioned work that speak to these concepts.
